But why is it called that?

Simply put, it’s a mix of where I’m currently located (Sheffield) and the bird commonly known as a chaffinch. When I was about ten years old, I got into birdwatching. Having convinced my parents to let me buy a bird feeder for our garden, a bird I had never seen (or perhaps never noticed before) parked up at one side of it. It was red - but it wasn’t a robin! It turned out it was a chaffinch.

The fact that animals I hadn’t registered in my consciousness could turn up outside my house with the right equipment may just have blown my young, developing mind. Since moving to Sheffield, I’m still pleasantly surprised when an unusual species makes an appearance around the local area. Maybe it’s a niche interest, but there you go!

By Alex (“Sheffinch”)

(And no, chaffinches don’t have eyebrows, as far as I’m aware. It’s not a completely accurate representation!)

Post is an edited version of an older one, this post was last edited 5th June 2025.

Hello!
